Discussion organized by the Siemenpuu Foundation at the World Village Festival 2019
Time: Sunday 26.5.2019 at 16:00 – 16:30
Venue: Taiga Stage, Finnish National Theatre Club Scene
Solar power and small-scale off-grid power solutions are considered as good solutions to electrify remote rural communities in the Global South. In November 2018 in Mali, the new African Community Power and Rural Electrification Platform (ACPREP) network was founded. In India, new affordable solar energy solutions have been developed for the poor communities.
How to promote sustainable, democratic and affordable energy solutions in the Global South? This panel discussion hosted by the Siemenpuu Foundation looks at the challenges and opportunities of solar power and off-grid power systems in providing electricity to rural areas and which types of electricity projects can best serve rural communities.
Panelists include PhD student Sini Numminen from Aalto University, who will on 10 June defend her PhD dissertation about the sustainability of micro-grids in India, and Access Energie and ACPREP founder Ibrahim Togola from Mali. The discussion is led by Siemenpuu’s director Hanna Matinpuro. The discussion is held in English.
