You are warmly welcome to Fingo’s food security working group’s morning coffee seminar on Thursday 23rd May starting at 9:45 CET+1/UTC+3 (Helsinki time).
In the seminar, we will be hearing from two Kenyan activists about their diverse experiences in advancing food security amidst climate and biodiversity crisis, as well as violations of indigenous peoples’ rights. The presentations will take audiences from the high halls of international decision-making in the UNFCCC to the localized dilemmas that communities tailor solutions to. The aim is to consider how Finnish development NGOs and policy could be mobilized to better support those in the frontlines of unfolding planetary crisis.
Christine Kandie will discuss Endorois people’s challenges in reaching food sovereignty from her community’s grassroot viewpoint. Kandie is a member of the Endorois community and the Executive Director of the Endorois Indigenous Women Empowerment Network (EIWEN). EIWEN serves as an advocacy platform for the rights of Endorois women, girls, and individuals with disabilities.
Julius Mbatia will orient his presentation on climate negotiations of climate finance and what are the systemic transformation points when it comes to the capacities of international climate finance system to deliver to localized food security issues. Mbatia is an environmental activist passionate about climate justice. He works as an expert for both Kenya and the African Group of Negotiators in UN climate negotiations.
